In your own words, describe:

Dao (Tao)
Dao is to follow and achieve the way.
Qi (Chi or Ki)
Qi is the breathe of energy of the world.

Yin & Yang (Eum & Yang)
Yin and Yang is Yin is black meaning earth, female, darkness and passiveness, while Yang is white meaning heaven, male, light and activity.

2. What is the basic goal of Daoism?

The basic goal of Daoism is to achieve Dao and to follow the wu-wei.

3. What is wu-wei?
Wu-wei is one's natural action, when one person should act and when one person should not act.

4. What do Daoists believe about nature?
Daoists believe that humans should follow natural order in order to find inner peace, and all creation is believed to lie behind in all functions and the changes of the natural world.

5. What was Confucius' view about things of a spiritual nature?
Confucius did not believe in idea of spiritual nature, therefore spiritualism was not part of his philosophy.

6. How do Daoists feel about the rules and hierarchy set up by the Confucians?
Daoists are against Confucianism rules because it is the opposite of what Daoists are trying to do.

7. According to legend, who was Laozi (Laotse)?
According to legend, Laozi is a man who was born old with wisdom and he had a white beard. He was the originator of a philosophy called Daoism or Taoism.

8. During what dynasty did Laozi supposedly live?
Laozi supposedly lived during the end of the Zhou Dynasty.

9. According to legend, why did Laozi leave China?
Laozi left China to leave in peace and quiet.

10. According to legend, what did Laozi give to the border guard?
According to legend, Laozi gave the border guard a book called Daodejing meaning The book of the way and it's power.

11. What are two different attitudes Taoists have toward death?
Firstly death is natural in Daoism and one should be sad however, should take death as a natural order, so do not be very sad.

12. Name at least three Chinese healing arts and describe what they are?
The three Chinese healing arts are Tai-chi, Acupuncture and Qigong.

13. When did Daoism first start to gain widespread acceptance in China? When did reach its height?
Daoism started to gain fame once the Han dynasty was falling down, since the Han dynasty was mostly Confucian believers. Daoism reached in 1018 CE to 907 CE.

14. Who were the Eight Immortals?
The Eight Immortals were eight humans that succeeded in achieving Dao, therefore they became immortals, humans that can live forever.

15. What other famous thinker lived at the same time as Zhuangzi?
The other famous thinker that lived at the same time as Zhuangzi is Mencius.

16. What happened to Daoism during the 20th century? What is the current state of Daoism?
Daoism during the 20th century started to decrease because of Chinese Government officials. They do not believe in Daoism therefore they take down Daoist temples down, there temples became poor, however Daoism is sill present up to this date, in some areas of China and Asia.

-- It is the 'something' that unlocks the doors to wisdom, happiness and truth. To do
something is actually nothing.

29. Why is an “Empty sort of mind” so valuable according to Taoism? (146-7)
-- It lets one see what is there as it is instead of concerning oneself with knowledge,
cleverness or abstract ideas.

30. Interpret the following quote: “To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain
wisdom, remove things every day.” (148-9)
-- Knowledge involves constant learning, or adding; wisdom and the Way involves forgetting, removing, to get to Nothing.

31. Why is the child the highest stage of development? (151)
-- A child is independent, clear minded and all seeing. Having a clear mind you can achieve

32. Why may knowledge and cleverness destroy life as we know it? (154)
-- They are the wrong ways of looking for things. The application of the knowledge creates more problems than it solves.Knowledge and cleverness destroy life because you can't search for wisdom, just by being smart. Also having knowledge and being clever is Confucian ideals, and Daoism disagrees with Confucian ideals.

- They have a political leader called the ‘Lamas’
- Tibetan buddhism is a branch of buddhism- It is much more similar to the indian branch than of the chinese buddhist branch.
- Buddhism became a major religion in Tibet, at the end of the 8th century.
- Trisong Detsen (Tibetan King) brought Buddhist ideas from India into Tibet, and translated the sacred texts into tibetan.
- Lama = teacher, like a monk, married people can be Lama’s.
- Practice rituals and believe in the stage of life and death.
- Tibetan book of death. Not actually translated into this, real meaning: Great Liberation through hearing during the intermediate State.
-This book deals with a person that experiences rebirth and death.
- The Dalai Lama disagrees with Dorje Shugden’s practices. The Dalai Lama discribes him as evil.







Sky Burial

- Many other burials such as tree burial (children), earth burial (diseases, killed by murderers),water burial (low status people), cremation and Stupa burial (For high lamas).- When a person dies, the person is shaped into a sitting position and is wrapped with white Tibetan cloth.- Lamas do worshipping.- Family members choose the day when the dead person should be buried.- Lamas chant sutras at the body to release sins, also uses smoke to attract condors.- If condors eat all of the dead body, it shows that the person has no sins, however if there are leftovers, the Lamas would chant sutras to redeem the sins.- Condors are holy birds.
